The 5 Stages of Landing a Sweet New Job-The Muse

The 5 Stages of Landing a Sweet New Job-The MuseThe 5 Stages of Landing a Sweet New JobI recently got a new job, and it (still) scares me every day. Im not frightened in the horror-film, Freddy vs. Jason type of way. However, I am scared because I dont know the answer to these two questions How in the world did I end up here, and whats going to happen next? Its frightening, exciting, and palm-sweat inducing- all at the same time. For me, it unfolded in five distinct stages. Since Im guessing Im not the only person who rides this emotional roller coaster, I thought Id share them with you. Bonus Ive also included how to survive each one.Stage 1 WaitI Got the Job?I spent approximately two weeks in shock when I landed my new job. I was wrapping up my current position, but my mind was spending all its time trying to catch up and process how I got the offer and what it meant. I wasted loads of valuable time sitting at my desk, wondering, Wait- me? Thats time I couldve spent asking myself a much better question How can I be successful starting on day one?The key lesson in this stage is that its OK to take time to celebrate (and process your shock), but you also need to be ready to hit the ground running. Make sure you understand the basics of your new job, and what you need to do now (take a refresher course, read a management book, buy a new office-appropriate wardrobe) to be ready on your first day.Stage 2 Can I Actually Do This?As soon as I finished questioning why I got hired, I started the job and immediately began to question whether or not I could do it.However, the time you spend wondering if youre up to the task takes time away from what really matters- getting better at your new job. Everyone has doubts, but entertaining them steals focus. How do I get over my fears? By reminding myself of this secret Im learning If they didnt think you were able to do the job, they wouldnt have hired you. Confidence is a muscle, and it needs to be stretched and flexed accor dingly. My best days so far have been the ones when I embraced my fear, reassured myself, and sprinted forward into the abyss. (Im still alive and kicking, so it cant be that bad.)Stage 3 Are They Going to Fire Me?Early into my new position, I sent an email that I thought could get me fired. It had no expletives, and it was well-worded and error-free. But I didnt know the person who would be receiving it and felt super nervous to reach out for the first time. (Spoiler alert Im still employed.) Being in new places and doing new things comes with a fair share of confusion and stress. I used to think that the more senior you get, the more structured your role becomes. That is absolutely false. In my experience, the higher you move in your career, the less formal structure you end up having, so you are tasked with creating it, empowering yourself, and rahmen your priorities. Fear sucks. But inaction because of fear sucks even more. More autonomy means more responsibility, so its up to y ou to set your own boundaries and find out the activities that are going to drive real value. Dont fear the failure. Fear inaction. Remember, no one knows everything about what theyre doing- and no one expects you to know what youre doing in the beginning. Having questions, getting confused, and making mistakes doesnt mean youre going to get called to the principals office. Stage 4 Wow. I Need Help.Finding friendly co-workers who will show you where the copy machine is located is just the beginning. In this new environment, youre going to need mentors and sponsors. Meaning, people around you who care enough to give you feedback about where you can improve who are transparent enough to share their mistakes and who are caring enough to remind you of who you can be, especially when you cant see it. These sponsors and mentors comprise a larger idea in our collective careers- they sit on your Personal motherboard of Directors. This group will morph and change, but their objective is simp le to provide you with the greatest insight to keep growing your career. Seek out these people, and start building relationships with them. Most importantly, dont be afraid to ask the questions you arent sure about. Those are the ones that matter.Stage 5 Whats Next?My new job was less about updating my LinkedIn profile and more about updating my dreams. New positions come with a caveat Youre there to change something for the better. You will be pushed, stretched, prodded, and pushed again. The other side of that is Im in a different space- personally and professionally- than I was two months ago, because I took a risk. In his New York Times bestseller Mastery, Robert Greene describes the successes of the worlds greatest thinkers and innovators as misconstrued as linear. The reality is more nuanced. He writes, Your whole life is a kind of apprenticeship to which you apply your learning skills. Everything that happens to you is a form of instruction if you pay attention. That apprenti ceship is exactly where I find myself right now. Growing, questioning, and exploring what I want to do, and how I can get there. Thats what a new job really is- exposure to an entirely new arena that is unfamiliar, but full of opportunity. Whatever youre dreaming about professionally is definitely possible, but you have to commit to a process of growth. But, believe me The risk of trying something completely out of your comfort zone is worth it, every single time. Photo of emotions courtesy of Shutterstock.

10 reasons your resume isnt getting you interviews

10 reasons your resume isnt getting you interviews 10 reasons your resume isnt getting you interviews If youre sending out lots of resumes without getting many calls for interviews, its time to conclude that your resume isnt doing its job.If youre like most people, youre making at least a few of these mistakes which will put your resume promptly in the no pile.1. Its generic. If your resume reads just like dozens of other candidates, no employer is going to call you. Your resume needs to convey that youre an exceptional candidate, bedrngnis just an average one whos no different from other applicants. Which leads us to2. It just lists duties and responsibilities, not accomplishments. In a job market thats flooded with candidates, a resume that reads like a series of job descriptions wont excite a hiring manager. Whatwillexcite a hiring manager is a resume that shows a track record of achievement, so you need to list specific accomplishments, not just duties.3. Its full of dense paragra phs rather than bulleted lists.Employers will only skim your resume initially, not read it word-for-word, and large blocks of text are hard to skim. An employer will take in more information about you if you use simple bulleted points.4. It leads with your education, even though youve been out of school for more than a few years.Generally your education should go beneath your work experience, because generally employers are most interested in what work experience youve had. Leading with your education just buries what will make most attractive to an employer.5. It doesnt include the dates of employment for each job youve held.Employers want to know how long you were at each job, and when. Resumes with clear dates are an immediate red flag that make hiring managers suspect youre hiding something.6. It wastes space on things that are irrelevant, like descriptions of your employers business. Some candidates devote two to three lines per job to describing the employer itself its size an d the nature of its business. Hiring managers might want that information when you move to the interview stage, but your resume isnt the place for it. Your resume should focus on you, and you alone.7. Its not specific.Employers want concrete specifics. Its not enough to say that you revitalized a department or publicized a program. What exactly did you do and what did it result in?8. It includes everything youve ever done, rather than just the highlights. The longer your resume is, the less likely an employer is to see the parts you want them to see. The initial scan of your resume is about 20 seconds - do you want that divided among three pages, or do you want it focused on the most important things you want to convey? Short and concise means that employers are more likely to read the parts you most care about.9. It includes irrelevant details, such as your age or your childrens names. Yes, people really do this. Employers dont care about these details, and including them will com e across as nave and unprofessional.10. It describes you in subjective terms.Your resume is for experience and accomplishments only. Its not the place for subjective traits, like great leadership skills, strong writer, or creative innovator. Hiring managers generally ignore anything subjective that an applicant writes about herself, because so many peoples self-assessments are wildly inaccurate theyre looking for provable facts. If you have those traits, list the accomplishments that demonstrate them instead.

The 3 things the worlds most successful people do every day

The 3 things the world’s most successful people do every day The 3 things the world’s most successful people do every day “Purpose is that feeling that you are part of something bigger than yourself, that you are needed, and that you have something better ahead. Purpose is what creates true happiness.” -  Mark ZuckerbergEveryone is looking for that magic formula or neatly prescribed list that lays out all the secrets of how to get exactly what you want. I’ve learned through my experience that it simply doesn’t exist. Everyone’s path to success is different, and in reality, there are hundreds of things that each individual follows that get them from point A to point B.But that’s not to say there aren’t commonalities or particular attributes that each successful person follows. I’ve read countless books, studied the lives of CEO’s and business executives that I’ve worked with first-hand, and listened to speakers at famed conferences. I’ve aimed to find the ingredients that everyone shares that makes them successful. I’ve determined that if you really want to start a successful rou tine, you should begin by focusing on a few things. You can’t “boil the ocean,” as the business cliche goes - it’s best to set small, incremental goals on your journey toward a bigger picture goal, objective and definition of success that aligns with your personal mission statement. Everything should tie back to what you truly want, as well as the values and game plan that speaks to exactly what will fulfill you and give you a sense of accomplishment. Here are the three things that I’ve distilled and believe add significant value to your day - no matter your location, financial status, age, gender or level in your career. I hope you’ll assimilate these activities and practices into your daily approach as you aim to reach new heights.1. Supercharge your mind and body at the beginning of each dayYes, this means mentally, emotionally, spiritually and of course, physically. While it would be easy to think that mental exercises and stimulation are more important, the research shows that exercising your mind is just as important as physical activity. What it actually comes down to is “the amount of activity is more important for stimulating the brain than the type of activity,” according to Harvard Medical School instructor, Dr. Scott McGinnis. In other words, consistency and repetition are paramount! Don’t get caught up in concerning yourself with the exactly right type of activity, or finding that panacea - because there is not just one solution. The way to supercharge your day may be watching an inspirational video in conjunction with reading 15 minutes of a great book to get you going. But it may be that one-mile run that you do when you first wake up, or those push-ups and crunches to get your blood flowing. It may be asking yourself a very simple philosophical question like Ben Franklin asked himself:What good shall I do this day? From there, the ideas start to flow. You can also practice meditation and deep-thinking in solitude, as well as exe rcising your faith in prayer or trust that your plans, hopes, goals and dreams will work out and that you will be fulfilled. All of these powerful routines breed confidence and self-assuredness that you will move on the right track toward accomplishing big things.“Dream and give yourself permission to envision a YOU that you choose to be.” -  Joy Page2. Speak, write and do: Focus on inspirational and positive things that reinforce your purpose and missionFirst things first - Be willing to take maximum ownership over your time. This begins by planning your day and setting goals. You don’t need to plan every minute, but you must allot time for creative thinking, goal-setting and relationship-building. Without these things, you do not have the foundation that you need. Your foundation should begin with your purpose, mission and values.Defining a clear purpose for who you are and what you want to become is the surest mark of a successful leader. When you are intentional and clea r about what you want, you have already won half the battle. From there, it’s a matter of staying positive, exercising great discipline and rigor to adhering to the activities that support your purpose. And then, staying positive and working hard to get them.Develop a personal mission statement for yourself. Here’s mine:To live each moment to the fullest by having a positive attitude, a smile and a genuine enjoyment for life, while giving everything I have to love the people and environment around me and make it a better place. Once you have clarified your intentions, start speaking and writing these things down. Tell them to people you trust. Then, go do them. You have to start somewhere, and your foundation is the best place. From there, you have a spring board that will vault you into the doing part, which is where you really go for the win.3. Don’t waste time; Don’t waste moments; Tie everything back to your responsibilities, ambitions, goals and serving those you loveI absolutely hate wasting time. It drives me crazy. I can barely wait sometimes for a webpage to load, and when it takes too long, I scribble ideas down on a notepad or OneNote, or think of a new activity that will add value to my life. It’s not necessarily that I’m unable to focus or that I lack attention - I just realize that time is the most valuable commodity. I learned this from Steve Jobs. It’s time you start to integrate this belief and thinking into your repertoire.Take advantage of savoring, embracing and immersing yours elf into every moment of your day. This is of course easier said than done. None of us want to embrace sitting in traffic or trying to pay attention in a boring meeting. Heck, flipping through our Instagram or Twitter is way more entertaining! Maybe. But when you begin to lose focus or start frittering away time, it can have great consequences in your life. You start to value time less and less. Be present in the moment, plan your day out and BUILD IN moments that will inspire you and propel you to keep pursuing your goals. Everything should tie back to your ambitions, goals and serving those who you love. When you fill your calendar with things that you love, activities and responsibilities for people you love, and fun, new things to learn, you start empowering and driving yourself to persevere. This is critical and the secret to success for everyone from J.K. Rowling to Oprah Winfrey to Elon Musk and Denzel Washington. When you practice these three things, you simply will not be deni ed. What you want will be yours. Now, get to work.Find your breakthroughJoin my newsletter and check out my Amazon Bestselling book, The Value of You. I worked out like a Victorias Secret model and heres what happened

I worked out like a Victoria’s Secret model and here's what happened I worked out like a Victoria’s Secret model and here's what happened Oh, Victoria’s Secret models. They’re fit, gorgeous and fierce  - it’s hard not to feel a tinge of envy when we see them strut down that runway. But what do VS Angels really have to do to look that flawless year-round? To find out, I decided to try one of their go-to workouts: Megan Roup’s new workout class called The Sculpt Society. The Sculpt Society class is an hour-long,  full-body workout  that combines cardio dance moves with strength training using light weights, sliders and your bodyweight. The group fitness class, which was created by former professional dancer and now fitness trainer  Megan Roup, is available for exercise lovers at boutique fitness facility  Project by Equinox  and is currently rolling out at select  New York City Equinox locations. After its initial introduction back in 2017, The Sculp Society class,  which promises to help participants achieve  a “long, lean physique in under an hour,” became an instant favorite among VS models, including the likes of Martha Hunt, Elsa Hosk and Kate Bock. Given the slew of fit celebs who rave about this workout class, I decided to see what all the hype was about. I took The Sculp Society class at an Equinox on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on a Sunday morning. (I may have been feeling a little hungover due to one too many cocktails the night before, but that’s neither here nor there.) As a frequent weightlifter, I initially brushed the class off as “easy,” thinking that it was  just another cardio dance class, so I wasn’t expecting it to be particularly challenging. Boy, was I wrong… The Class Format Upon entering the class, I immediately noticed the fitness status of other participants. I’m talking ladies in their sixties with sculpted abs rocking sports bras. (To be fair, this is the kind of crowd that you would expect at an Equinox on the Upper West Side, but still.) Most people had already claimed their spot on the studio floor with a yoga mat, 2 to 3-pound dumbells, ankle weights and signature The Sculpt Society sliders by their sides. I followed suit and rushed to get my own equipment. The class started with a dance-inspired cardio warmup, complete with jumping jacks, side shuffles and twirls (which were especially hard for my  slightly-throbbing head). After this 10-minute warmup, the sculpting portion of the class began. Using our 2 and 3-pound dumbells, our instructor led  us through the arm-sculpting segment of the workout. With high reps and our low weights, we worked on toning our triceps, biceps and shoulder muscles. As someone who’s used to lifting heavier weights for fewer repetitions, my arms definitely started to feel like jello after the twentieth rep. After completing the arm workout segment, we spent the majority of the remaining portion of the class working the core, booty  and legs. To target our abs, we did multiple plank variations, mountain climbers and pikes using The Sculp Society sliders. We didn’t get any breaks between exercises (although I still took a few to catch my breath). Following this core-demolishing segment, it was time to use the dreaded ankle weights. They seemed light at first, but after completing countless rounds of donkey kicks, four-legged sidekicks and fire hydrants, it felt like I had 30 pounds pulling me toward the floor. The last 10 minutes of class were dedicated to a quick cardio burst (similar to the warmup) and stretching, after which we all attempted to wobble out of the studio. Post-Class Feels Although I had arrived in a zombie-like state, the dance party music combined with the sweat-inducing moves gave me a jolt of energy. I felt like I was ready to take on the rest of the day. I wasn’t sore yet, but I did feel like I got a solid full-body workout (especially for my arms and abs). I did feel slightly dejected because I had to take breaks during certain exercises, as well as modify some of the moves. But it was my first time taking the class, and anyone who’s trying out a new workout should cut themselves some slack. The Verdict The Sculpt Society class is great for those busy bees who are looking to work on their cardio and strength training in a single hour-long session. It’s not so great for those who are uncoordinated (like me) and those who have trouble following choreography (also me). Also, even if you’re taking this class, we’d still recommend that you lift heavier weights  - ones that you can’t lift for more than 12 reps before failure  - to see and feel  significant gains  in muscle strength and mass (because that’s how you really get that “toned” look that those VS Angels are rocking on the runway).Pro tip:  If you decide to try The Sculp Society at an Equinox location, make sure that you get to the studio early. Classes get pretty crowded, so it’s wise to carve out a little space in the studio for you and your equipment so that you’re not constantly bumping into your neighbor during the “dance cardio” portion of the class. This  article  was originally published on  Swirled .com  in the Thrive section, which covers valuable  career and personal finance content  for Millennials.

6 Tips for Balancing Career and Family

6 Tips for Balancing Career and Family 6 Tips for Balancing Career and Family Balancing career and family is not easy. I am a father of three wonderful children, with ages 10, 8, and 5. They bring my wife and me great joy! However, they are also a lot of work. Between school, extra-curricular activities, and daily routines, the time flies. Between the time at work and the time at home, there is no more free time. The days of binging Netflix videos are long gone. So, what if you find yourself in search of a job?How do you manage all of the above or even an online career search? Finding the time An online career search can feel like a full-time job. Updating the resume, writing a new cover letter, and networking with other professionals all take time while in search of a job. None of these career search requirements are trivial pursuits. I have changed jobs twice since I have had kids. Thankfully, both times I was still employed. Indeed, a mentor long ago taught me: “It is better to look for a job when you have a job” However, with family obligations and a full-time job, where do I find the time to keep balancing career and family? I do this in the following six ways. 1. Attitude adjustment The first step is to treat time as money. Benjamin Franklin, in Advice to a Young Tradesman, Written by an Old One, reminds us, “Time is money”. Many of us work hard at balancing career and family. We work hard to be good stewards of our money and many struggles with the stewardship of time. While wasting time does not feel as tangible as ripping up money, it is equally unwise. 2. Focus The second step is to schedule a time where you can focus on your online career search. I would schedule an hour every other day to define my professional brand, review my CV, my LinkedIn profile, my online content, follow-up with my network, etc. I schedule this in my day just as I would schedule a workout. Note: Balancing career and family while in search of a job is much easier when you are healthy. 3. Ask for help Leverage your entire network and ask your family, friends, and mentors to help critique your CV and broaden your network. Or, hire a professional to work with you. Announce you are in search of a job. See who can help you with your online career search. 4. Take your time Unless your current job is in jeopardy, take your time in your offline and online career search. Use the time to reflect on your career objectives, your value proposition, and most importantly your brand. 5. Be strategic with your timing The Spring and Fall are the two seasons of the year where employers are most likely to be actively hiring. So, you will want to launch your online career search in January/February to prepare for the Spring hiring season; similarly, August for the Fall hiring season. 6. Be picky about what you do Since you’ll have limited time available while balancing career and family, make your interviews, networking meetings, and applications count. Do not put this off Our time in this world is finite. It is fixed, and the clock is ticking. Even if you are not in search of a job, make the most of your time. If you feel like a new job would be better both professionally and for the family, you need to pursue it to start balancing career and family. With a better stewardship of time and help from your network or other professionals, you will be able to find a new job. It may feel daunting, but this career search will take you to the next echelon of your career and a new chapter of your life.

5 ways retirees can tackle their credit card debt

5 ways retirees can tackle their credit card debt 5 ways retirees can tackle their credit card debt You’ve planned and saved for your retirement all your life and now that you’ve finally quit your job and embraced your retired lifestyle you have a problem. Your credit card debt is threatening to compromise your golden years.Seniors over 65 have an  average credit card debt  of $6,351 and those between 65 and 69 have even more â€" $6,876 on average according to the US Census Bureau and the Federal Reserve.Because retirees have limited incomes, they sometimes have to  resort to credit cards  to make up for shortfalls in their budget or unexpected expenses like medical emergencies. But that limited income also makes it particularly difficult for retirees to pay off debt. If you don’t try to aggressively tackle and repay your credit card debt, it could end up ballooning and affecting your retirement.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Here are some suggestions for how you c an get rid of debt for good.Refinance Your DebtIf you have a significant amount of credit card debt, the first thing you should do is look into refinancing or consolidating your debt. Many seniors have good credit scores which means that you could qualify for a loan at a much lower interest rate than you’re paying on your credit cards. If you own your own home, you could also take out a home equity line of credit (HELOC) and pay off your credit card debt with that. Because a HELOC is a secured loan which uses your home equity, the interest rate will be particularly low.By paying off your credit card debt with a low-interest loan, it will be much  easier to repay your credit card debt  since more of your money will go towards the principal of the loan each month rather than the interest.Downsize Your BudgetYou might have had a particular retirement lifestyle in mind when you were planning for retirement, but your credit card debt is compromising your financial health and it’s impo rtant that you focus on taking care of your debt now so that it won’t impede your future.Start by looking at your budget to see what you can cut. If you’re in a significant amount of debt, you might want to cut some of your big expenses. For example, you might want to sell your second car if you have two cars or downsize to a smaller house. Not only will you save money on monthly expenses by doing that, but you will make money from the sale of your home or car that you could potentially put towards your debt.If your debt is smaller or if you can’t sell those assets, then you should look at other expenses such as food, entertainment, and travel and cut back. Use that extra money to put towards your debt in order to ensure that you pay it off quickly.Focus on the Highest Interest RateIf you can’t consolidate your credit card debt, it’s important to focus on aggressively paying back the cards with the highest interest rate first. You could also transfer your high interest bal ance to a  balance transfer credit card  at a lower interest rate. This will ensure that you  pay less overall in interest  and are able to get debt free much more quickly. After you pay off the card with the highest interest rate, you should then switch your attention to the card with the next highest interest rate. This process is often referred to as a debt avalanche method since it is the quickest way to pay off debt.Get a Part-Time JobWhile many people think that retiring means you will never work again, a lot of ‘retired’ people start a second career or take on a part-time job to stay busy or to make ends meet. Working a little could help supplement your retirement income and allow you to pay off your debt more quickly. This could also help boost your retirement savings to make up for your debt.Depending on your qualifications and experience, you could do some freelance or consulting work in the field that you previously worked in or you could try out a new career.Avoid Debt in the FutureNo matter what strategy you use to get out of debt, it’s important that you try to avoid debt in the future. That means that you should figure out why you went into debt and what steps you can take to ensure it doesn’t happen again. For example, if you went into debt because you had an emergency, then make sure to save an emergency fund that you can tap into the next time something happens. Similarly, if you find you always go into  credit card debt around the holidays  due to added expenses, consider cutting back or saving a bit every month to tide you over in December.Whatever you do, make sure that you don’t get into credit card debt again.Jeff Gitlen writes about a wide range of finance topics including everything from student loans to credit cards to small business financing. How to Become an Art Director

How to Become an Art Director How to Become an Art Director An art director oversees the art,  the photographs, the graphics and the drawn images that appear in newspapers, magazines, ad campaigns, and on book covers. Generally, the art director is the person who oversees the entire design department, working with photo editors and editors to coordinate how images will match up with the copy.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2017, art directors make $92.500 a year and the job outlook between 2016 and 2026 is expected to grow by 5 percent. More than simply assigning a photographer or illustrator to create an image, an art director actually works on creating the visual concept. For example, at a magazine, an art director would work to create the specific look and feel of the entire magazine- ensuring that the visuals have a unified look throughout. If youve ever noticed that certain magazines use certain layouts and certain types of images, you’re looking at the work of the art director. Where Art Directors Work Art directors work in various fields of the media and communications industry such as advertising, book publishing, and at magazines. They usually specialize in one sector of the industry. For example, they may focus on magazine publishing and then specialize in a subset of that industry such as fashion magazines or home design magazines. If working at a magazine, the art director will conceive the layouts and decide how the art should match up with the various stories in the magazine. Book publishing art directors, on the other hand, often focus solely on book covers and hire designers to create the covers while overseeing their work. At some publishing houses, however, the art director may also do some of the designing. An art director at an ad agency will work with an editor, or a copywriter, to create the images that go with an ad campaign. Most art directors specialize in a specific area, such as print (e.g., magazines), television, or digital ads for the web.   How to Become an Art Director Most art directors have degrees from art schools where they’ve studied graphic design, photography, and drawing. A background in graphic design is essential for most art director jobs today. Those who want to get into the field will need to be adept at such programs as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other similar design software. These programs allow art directors to edit photos and create graphics. Most art directors and designers favor Apple computers, which were originally designed and marketed to graphic designers. A good art school will train students in all of the relevant programs theyll need to succeed and provide them  with a portfolio- which is crucial for landing a job in the industry.   Someone looking to work as an art director in an ad agency, for example, needs to show a potential employer sample ad campaigns that she or he has created. These will come from your art school as well as any internships you completed. Education and Training for Art Directors Given the competition for art director positions, most require at least a bachelors degree in design or graphic arts. For those planning to go into advertising, a concentration or minor in that subject is recommended. A variety of work samples showing versatility is required, and most art directors spend some time in junior positions (such as designer or assistant art director) to acquire related experience. Ad agencies usually ask for at least three years experience.

Public Service Announcements Yesterday, and Today

Public Service Announcements Yesterday, and Today Public Service Announcements Yesterday, and Today A public service announcement (PSA) is an advertisement that a television or radio station airs for a cause or a charity. A PSA can tout the importance of medical check-ups for children or ask you to donate money to the Salvation Armys bell ringers. Youre probably familiar with PSAs, whether youre aware of it not. All those TV  spots about the importance of screening for breast or prostate cancer are public service announcements. PSAs go far to alert and remind people about their safety, and the safety of others. What Makes a PSA Different Than a Commercial Public service announcements are not paid advertising. A broadcaster donates the ad time as part of its commitment to serving the public interest. While there is no requirement for a broadcaster to air PSAs, it reflects well on the station when it comes time to renew its broadcast license with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), so most broadcasters air them. Youll typically see public service announcements airing during low-viewing time slots such as after midnight and before 6 am. Youll also see them on stations with less share of the advertising market than their competitors. Thats because those stations have more time to fill. A typical TV commercial break is two minutes. If a TV station only sold one minutes worth of traditional TV advertising, then it may choose to fill the remaining one minute with a 60-second PSA or two 30-second PSAs. This approach benefits everyone. Some TV stations make a decision to devote a certain number of advertising slots to PSAs, particularly for a campaign that has local impact. For example, in a city with a high teenage pregnancy rate, a Top 40 radio station that is top-ranked with a young audience might air spots on abstinence or birth control throughout its broadcast day, not just after midnight. Famous Public Service Announcements There are several famous public service announcement campaigns that have aired across the country. These campaigns are typically tied to the Ad Council, which produces high-quality advertising with the help of some of the most creative minds in the nation. Two of the most famous campaigns in history involve protecting the outdoors. Smokey Bear has reminded people not to start forest fires since 1944. Another iconic PSA from the 1960s to the 1980s was Iron Eyes Cody, the Native American who shed a tear because people polluted his native land. Today, McGruff the Crime Dog teaches children the dangers they face in the world and how to prevent being victimized. McGruff has been on the case since 1979. Why Public Service Announcements Arent Seen as Much Today Because broadcasters arent forced to air public service announcements, for financial reasons, many dont. When there is time to fill in a commercial break, they often air TV station promotions, like  topical ads for newscasts. In the heyday of Smokey Bear, TV  stations didnt produce as many promotional ads for themselves. It was easier to run a PSA than to film a news promo. Today, in the uber-competitive world of broadcasting, TV stations want to brand themselves with as much self-advertising as possible. Unfortunately, PSAs are often left out in the cold or relegated to the wee hours of the morning.

Hiring your First Startup Employee

Hiring your First Startup Employee Hiring your First Startup Employee Hiring your First Startup Employee Conlan Hiring your first employee is a big moment for any entrepreneur, whether its your first startup or your 10th. These insights will help things go smoothly. 1. Start With the Numbers Check your books to ensure that hiring your first startup employee wont crash your fledgling company. Youll need to consider how much you can reasonably afford in salaryand whether youll provide benefits, says Brandi Koskie, who has been involved in several tech and creative startups and is co-founder of Clover Partners, based in Denver and Oklahoma City. You may also consider offering startup equity for first employees. There will be other costs associated with hiring your first employee recruiting, payroll taxes, equipment and training all of which get your first startup employee up and running. 2. Find Someone Who Shares Your Vision Look for an employee who wants to be a part of your business and who buys into your idea and dream, Koskie says. You want to find someone whos prepared to give a lot of themselves and their time for the job, knowing that the biggest tangible rewards may not come for years. Traits to look for include being a team player with strong collaboration skills and a sense of urgent curiosity, says Jessica Salans, co-founder of a startup publishing imprint, Coralstone Press, in Los Angeles. Youll need a savvy and alert team that can look for opportunities as the business forges its own path. 3. Assess Candidates Carefully Hiring your first employee involves spending time with candidates, Koskie says, and its a good idea to take more time than an interview with your finalists. You may have time constraints for how soon you need to make a hire, but consider bringing potential new hires on in a contract capacity before you make the job offer, Koskie says. Consider giving them a paid one-off project. That way you can see how they work, Koskie says. Are they disruptive or are they contributing in a meaningful way? If you have concerns about their skills, you can put them to the test. You can start to see how they respond to pressure, or how above and beyond theyre willing to go. This is mutually beneficial, as they get to test the waters of their new employer, too. 4. Look for a Partner When hiring for first startup employee, look for someone whose strengths can complement their weaknesses, such as someone who can oversee operations while you sell. I always have a very clear idea of what that first employee will do, whether its development, marketing or just plain customer support, says Dean Levitt, founder of Teacup Analytics in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hiring them to fulfill tasks or a role that the founder currently does successfully but doesnt have enough time for is perfect. That means the founder can train, manage and judge the work accurately. 5. Make Sure You Like Them Your first startup employee will likely be someone youll work with all the time and it can be a big change. Look for someone whos easy to spend time with and who doesnt get on our nerves. I consider personality to be more important than expertise, Levitt says. Youll need to work closely together, so getting along is vital to keeping yourself motivated during the rough times.
